Egill Sæbjörnsson is a visual artist that is also known for his music, both as a musician, composer and as an explorer in the field of music. He has often collaborated with his friends from S.L.Á.T.U.R. such as Áki Ásgeirsson, Magnús Jensson and Halldór Úlfarsson. His music got know when the album Tonk of the lawn came out on BadTaste Smekkleysa Records in the year 2000. On that album is the song “I love you so” that is well known in Iceland and has reached international airplay. He has since then released a few albums, but the last one, Moonlove, was released on The Vinyl Factory London, but the release concert was held at HAU Theatre Berlin the same year. In his art installations with video projections and sound he often create sculptures that are at the same time: non-human performers, musical instruments, and the musical score at the same time.

In the song Free again, Egill solely used the proto-langspil created at the IIL, sampling techniques and recordings of his own voice. The song was done fast and was finished within one hour. Egill is convinced that the future of music making is bound to the invention of new musical instruments and is highly content to get the opportunity to experiment with this new invention.

Josh Wilkinson did the mastering. The project is supported by the Recording fund and Composer’s fund of Bylgjan and Stöð 2.

Egill Sæbjörnsson was born in 1973 in Iceland and is currently based in Berlin. He has been making artworks that bring together 3D environments, digital projections, technology, and sound since the 1990s. These range from small intimate installations in museum and gallery settings to larger-scale permanent architectural installations. Sæbjörnsson conceives his work as a technological continuation of painting and sculpture, exploring the space between the virtual and physical. His work is playful and humorous but always probes deeper ontological and philosophical questions. Sæbjörnsson gives regular performance lectures in which he explores the theoretical underpinnings of his practice.

Hann varð þekktur fyrir tónlist sína þegar plata hans Tonk of the lawn kom út á Smekkleysu árið 2000. Á þeirri plötu má finna lagið “I love you so” sem er velþekkt á Íslandi og þó víðar væri leitað.
