Gufunes - The First Single of the Proto-Langspil Album

The Intelligent Instruments Label, an offshoot of the Intelligent Instruments Lab, is preparing to introduce an exciting project that aims to showcase the artistic results of their proto-langspil instrument. This project marks the first single release from a forthcoming album featuring a diverse group of artists. What connects these tracks is their shared use of a unique instrument known as the proto-langspil — a fusion of the traditional Icelandic langspil with modern electronic elements. This self-resonating instrument is equipped with algorithms which change the resonance of the strings in response to playing, giving it a degree of agency in the music.

“Gufunes,” the debut release from this album, is set to be released Friday the 13th of October. It‘s a collaborative effort by Hrafnkell Örn Guðjónsson and Esther Þorvaldsdóttir. Hrafnkell, also known as Keli, is a well-regarded drummer with a significant presence in both Icelandic and international music scenes. His work spans various genres, and collaborations with various artists, most notably his band Agent Fresco. Esther, a member of the Intelligent Instruments Lab and Læti! / Girls Rock! Iceland, brings a decade’s worth of experience in music and culture management, working with artists, festivals, and conferences in Iceland and beyond.

In “Gufunes,” Keli & Esther have taken the approach of using the proto-langspil as the primary sound source. The instrument’s standout feature, a small embedded computer running algorithms to manipulate string vibrations, brings an element of unpredictability to the music, resulting in a captivating and unorthodox sonic experience.

The track derives its name from the couple’s home, Gufunes, which serves as a metaphor for the blend of old and new. Once a thriving settlement in Iceland’s history, Gufunes later became a waste disposal site before evolving into a center for creative industries and residential development. This transformation parallels the evolution of the langspil from a traditional Icelandic instrument to a futuristic algorithm sound experiment. A mix of tradition and innovation.

Keli and Esther

Keli & Esther’s creative process was marked by spontaneity and experimentation, mirroring the proto-langspil’s unpredictable nature. The duo embarked on a non-linear journey of recording, manipulation, and editing, shaping the soundscape as they went. Keli uses a violin bow to create a rhythm on the langspil’s strings, while Esther adjusts the string’s suspension, modulating the pitch and rhythm in real time. This collaborative interaction between artist and instrument encapsulates the essence of “Gufunes” and the entire album project.

“We even got our Gufunes neighbours involved in the release process,” explains Esther. Keli agrees: “We truly have the best group of people living here in the new Gufunes buildings. Artist Glytta Hafbur gave us the photo of the old harbor to use as the single artwork, they have a very keen eye for beauty.” Esther adds that they don‘t have to go very far to see magnificent nature in this place.

As “Gufunes” previews the upcoming album, listeners can anticipate a unique auditory experience from each of the artists featured on the album, including Berglind María Tómasdóttir, Eydís Kvaran, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Kira Kira, Eyjólfur Eyjólfsson, Linus Orri and Davíð Brynjar. Gufunes - Gufunes - Fyrsta lag Prótó-Langspil plötunnar

The Intelligent Instruments Label, sem er afsprengi Intelligent Instruments Lab, er að undirbúa kynningu á spennandi verkefni sem miðar að því að sýna listrænan árangur prótó-langspils hljóðfæris þeirra. Þetta verkefni markar fyrstu útgáfu á smáskífu af væntanlegri plötu með fjölbreyttum hópi listafólks. Það sem tengir þessi lög saman er að allt listafólkið notar hið einstaka hljóðfæri sem kallast prótó-langspil — samruni hefðbundins íslensks langspils og nútíma raftónlistarþátta. Hljóðfæri er sjálf-ómandi, útbúið algrímum sem breyta ómun strengjanna til að bregðast við þegar spilarinn leikur á hljóðfærið, sem gefur hljóðfærinu sjálfu ákveðið listrænt frelsi í tónlistinni.

„Gufunes“ er fyrsta útgáfan af þessari plötu og kemur út föstudaginn 13. október. Það er samstarfsverkefni Hrafnkels Arnar Guðjónssonar og Estherar Þorvaldsdóttur. Hrafnkel, einnig þekktur sem Keli, þekkja mörg sem trommuleikara bæði í íslensku og alþjóðlegu tónlistarlífi. Hann hefur unnið með fjölda tónlistarfólks innan margra tónlistarstefna, þá helst með hljómsveit hans Agent Fresco. Esther er meðlimur í Intelligent Instruments Lab og er framkvæmdastjóri félagasamtakanna Læti! / Stelpur rokka!. Hún kemur með áratuga reynslu í tónlistar- og menningarstjórnun inn í verkefnið og hefur unnið með listafólki, á hátíðum og ráðstefnum á Íslandi og víðar.

Í laginu “Gufunes” notuðu Keli og Esther prótó-langspilið sem aðal hljóðgjafa. Áberandi eiginleiki hljóðfærisins, lítil innbyggð tölva sem keyrir algrími til að stjórna strengjatitringi, færir tónlistinni ófyrirsjáanleika, sem leiðir af sér grípandi og óhefðbundna upplifun hljóðfæraleikarans.

Lagið dregur nafn sitt af heimili þeirra, Gufunesi, sem þeim þótti virka vel sem myndlíking fyrir blöndu af hinu gamla og því nýja. sinni var Gufunesið blómleg byggð, kaupstaður með kirkju og mikið mannlíf, en síðar varð Gufunes staður ruslahauga og endurvinnslu, áður en það þróaðist í miðstöð skapandi greina og íbúabyggðar. Þessi umbreyting kallast á við þróun langspilsins úr hefðbundnu íslensku hljóðfæri yfir í framúrstefnulega algrímatilraun. Blanda af hefð og nýsköpun.

Sköpunarferli Kela og Estherar einkenndist af hinu óvænta og tilraunakennda, sem endurspeglaði óútreiknanlegt eðli prótó-langspilsins. Tvíeykið lýsir ferlinu sem ólínulegu ferðalagi um upptökur, pródúseringu og klippingu og mótuðu þau hljóðheiminn eftir því sem á leið. Keli notar til dæmis fiðluboga til að búa til takt á strengjum langspilsins og Esther stillir tóna strengjanna í rauntíma meðan Keli spilar taktinn. Þetta samspil hljóðfæris og spilara kjarnar bæði „Gufuness“ og plötuverkefnisins í heild sinni.

„Meira að segja nágrannar okkar tóku þátt í útgáfuferlinu,“ útskýrir Esther. Keli tekur undir: „Við erum sannarlega með besta fólkið sem býr hér í nýju Gufunesi. Listakvárið Glytta Hafbur gaf okkur myndina af gömlu höfninni til að nota sem artwork lagsins, hán hefur mjög næmt auga fyrir fegurð.“ Esther bendir svo á að ekki þarf heldur að sækja vatnið yfir lækinn hér þar sem þau eru umkringd náttúrufegurð.

„Gufunes“ er fyrsta lagið af væntanlega plötu og geta hlustendur búist við einstakri hljóðupplifun frá hverjum og einum listamanni sem tekur þátt í verkefninu. Þar á meðal er Berglind María Tómasdóttir, Eydís Kvaran, Egill Sæbjörnsson, Kira Kira, Eyjólfur Eyjólfsson, Linus Orri og Davíð Brynjar. Josh Wilkinson masteraði plötuna.
