# The sixth track from Intelligent Instruments Lab's proto-langspil album comes from Davíð Brynjar

Davíð is an artistic associate at the Intelligent Instruments Lab and co-runs Carrier Records–a label for new and experimental music–with Sam Pluta, Katie Young, and Jeff Snyder. Naturally, we asked him to write a piece for our album, which aim is to showcase to the experiments and research we‘ve been doing with our upgrade to the old traditional instrument.

This is what how he describes his work for the proto-langspil album:

Originally conceptualized as an exploration of the aesthetic of sound baths, the track uses simple generative procedures to provide the performer with a conversational partner. Pulsating bass tones provide vertical pillars against which upper frequencies explore the vertical relationships between the different harmonics of the strings of the instrument.

Davíð Brynjar Franzson’s is an Icelandic composer based in Los Angeles. His recent collaborations explore the use of dynamic aural scores and environments to provide structure and temporal form to performers to create within and against. This is most tangible in works such as an Urban Archive as an English Garden––created in collaboration with Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir (Nordic Affect), Russell Greenberg (Yarn/Wire), Júlia Mogensen, and mattie barbier (rage thormbones, wasteLAnd, wildUp)––where performers play into an ever shifting network of resonances that freeze and move the sound of the performer slowly through space and around the audience; and fragments––a series of works created in collaboration with Nordic Affect, Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir, and Stephanie Aston––where the score is in the form of an artificially intelligent improvisational partner that both listens to and responds to the performer, making the piece emergent, based on what the two mutually agree upon.

Davíð er listrænn samstarfsaðili Intelligent Instruments Lab og rekur Carrier Records - útgáfu fyrir nýja og tilraunakennda tónlist - ásamt Sam Pluta, Katie Young og Jeff Snyder. Við báðum hann að sjálfsögðu um að skrifa verk fyrir plötuna okkar, sem miðar að því að sýna tilraunir og rannsóknir sem við höfum verið að gera með nýja útfærslu á gamla hefðbundna hljóðfærinu.

Lagið var upphaflega hugsað sem könnun á fagurfræði hljóðbaðanna og notar einfaldar skapandi aðferðir til að veita flytjandanum samræðufélaga. Púlsandi bassatónar veita lóðréttar stoðir og efri tíðni kannar tengsl á milli mismunandi strengja hljóðfærisins.

Davíð Brynjar Franzson er íslenskt tónskáld en býr í Los Angeles. Undanfarið hefur hann verið að kanna notkun kraftmikilla hljóðnema og umhverfi til að veita flytjendum uppbyggingu og tímabundið form til að skapa innan og á móti. Það má sjá í verkum eins og Urban Archive as an English Garden––sem unnið var í samstarfi við Höllu Steinunni Stefánsdóttur (Nordic Affect), Russell Greenberg (Yarn/Wire), Júlíu Mogensen og Mattie Barbier (rage thorbones, wasteLAnd, wildUp )––þar sem flytjendur spila inn í síbreytilegt net ómuna sem frýs og færir hljóð flytjandans hægt um rýmið og í kringum áhorfendur; and fragments––röð verka unnin í samstarfi við Nordic Affect, Höllu Steinunni Stefánsdóttur og Stephanie Aston––þar sem tónlistin er í formi spunafélaga knúinn áfram af gervigreind sem bæði hlustar á og bregst við því sem flytjandinn gerir og finnur sameiginlegan grundvöll í tónlistinni.
