“Stengjavera” – An installation by Jack Armitage at Nordic House, 9-10 Dec.

IIL researcher Jack Armitage is exhibiting an installation at the Nordic House over two days in December. The piece - “Strengjavera” (described below) - is based on a combination of the Magnetic Resonator Piano and Jack’s artificial life research project Tolvera. Description

Strengjavera (“string being”) is an installation that delves into the concept of self-organising systems through the interaction of artificial life programs with an acoustic grand piano. Viewers are invited to witness the unpredictable yet mesmerising patterns that emerge as the piano’s strings are set into motion by electromagnetism, controlled by biomimetic simulations. The piece explores the potential for agential systems to adapt and evolve in real-time, creating a dynamic and ever-changing soundscape that reflects the complexity and beauty of natural systems. By blurring the boundaries between technology and nature, Strengjavera prompts viewers to reflect on the relationship between human agency and autonomous systems, while also celebrating the beautiful natural acoustics of the piano in novel and unheard ways.

Strengjavera er innsetning þar sem sjá má kraftmikinn og síbreytilegan hljóðheim endurspegla margbreytileika og fegurð í náttúrunni. Hún er nefnilega kerfi sem stjórnar sér sjálft, eða lífgervigreindarforrit (ens. artificial life program).

Hér hefur Strengjavera tekið yfir flygil Norræna hússins. Áhorfendur fá að sjá óútreiknanleg og dáleiðandi mynstur sem myndast þegar strengir píanósins byrja að titra fyrir tilstilli rafsegla sem Strengjaveran stjórnar. Hún sýnir okkur eftirlíkingar úr lífhermi (ens. biomimetic simulations) og spilar útkomuna á flygilinn jafnóðum.

Tölvukerfi sem stjórna sér sjálf, eins og Strengjaveran, hafa ýmsa möguleika til að aðlagast og þróast í rauntíma og það er einmitt það sem við fáum að sjá með innsetningunni og sömuleiðis heyra í fallegum hljómi píanósins sem hér er notað á nýstárlegan hátt. Með því að má út mörkin milli tækni og náttúru hvetur Strengjavera áhorfendur til að velta fyrir sér sambandinu milli mannlegs sjálfræðis og tölvukerfa sem stjórna sér sjálf.
